Characters:

Main characters include Chris Matheson and his friends and family as well as some familiar names and faces. Chris Matheson is a widowed single father with three daughters who is a retired law enforcement officer and is part of a "book club" named Geezer Squad. He is loyal, observant and believes in making the effort, even when it goes unrecognized by the other party. There is also his eccentric and charming mother Doris whom ROBBERS should be more afraid of than anyone else. In addition to Doris there is his lover Helen Clarke who has a daughter of her own and is struggling with an unexpected surprise. Sterling and other pets are filled with delightful antics. There are other characters that play a role in the story, but it's more fun to discover them through reading this book.

Plot:

The story is in third person narrative from Chris and his family's and friends points of view. Just like with previous books, there is humor, comedy, German shepherd antics, multiple plots and subplots that take a real pro to balance out. But there is also tension, exploration of relationships between two damaged people and so forth. While it's a stand-alone book, I would highly suggest that reading Lauren Carr's previous mysteries will truly be a time worth spending on.

Opinion:

After reading  twelve of Lauren Carr's mysteries, I have to say that immersing myself in her tales and following her characters and the twists of mysteries never gets old, but instead these mysteries are best described as classics, a vintage wine in a goblet with numerous variations, each one unpredictable, complex and memorable. While this mystery focuses on Chris Matheson, one of the previous detectives also shows up to help Chris as well as a certain favorite retired lawyer. Just like with previous twelve books, I have greatly enjoyed diving into THE LAST THING SHE SAID, and am hoping for more mysteries by the author.
