Characters:

Main character includes Gator, a pit bull dog mix as well as his companion Magnolia. Gator is best described as loyal, easy going and often worries about the future and Magnolia. Magnolia is a puppy mill survivor who gets overwhelmed with too much change and enjoys learning about Gators world and what being a dog means. The human characters are also prominent and are given wonderful personalities.

The story is in third person narrative from Gators point of view, and it begins with when his human, Gavin, is given a puppy to teach him responsibility in taking care of a pet. Throughout the years spanning in the book, the reader becomes privy to the family events, learning to bond with both people and animals, which makes the upcoming situation that much crueler.

Opinion:

Quite often people who abandon pets for one reason or another are often portrayed as evil. In this story though, what if at the time you had no choice but to do what you did? What would be the consequences for that decision? Hurricane Dog by Sunny Weber dares to examine those questions through Gators story. At the time Hurricane Katrina rolled into Louisiana, my family and I had very limited understanding of pet abandonment and what it does to humans and animals. I am ashamed to admit that I did not understand what the big deal was. Luckily I understand a whole lot better now. For me this was a truly heartbreaking story because Sunny Weber doesn't shy away from exposing the cruelties of being stuck within a hurricane while people had no choice but to leave pets behind. The family that took care of Gator and his partner Magnolia are very good hearted people who had to make a very difficult decision.
