Summary:

Eight-week-old Australian Shepherd Kaya is kidnapped by a nasty coyote to be food for his mate and puppies. Instead, the loving mother raises Kaya with her own pups. But as hard as she tries, Kaya can't completely fit in-she can't kill prey or stay awake for night hunts. Why can't she make herself a true coyote? Constantly criticized by her coyote father, Kaya finds support in her new mother and siblings. She also figures out how to contribute through teamwork with her brother and sister. Trapped by a dog rescue, Kaya re-enters the human world and learns the differences between how dogs and coyotes live. When freed to roam again, does she return to her forest freedom-or remain with her farm family? Can Kaya forever straddle between the Wild and the Mild?

Characters:

Main characters include Kaya, a young puppy who got stolen by coyote and was being raised alongside her two coyote siblings.  Kaya is best described as loyal, inquisitive and she strongly desires to find a place to fit in. She is also a creative thinker and managed to dig herself into her coyote mothers and her coyote siblings hearts. While the good characters are drawn well, I do strongly feel that Kayas coyote father should have been worked on more, or at least I wanted to kind of understand him beyond the whole he is bad just because.

Theme:

We can all take advantage of our circumstances

Plot:

The story is told in first person narrative from Kayas point of view. The story is also linear and doesn't begin with medias res. ( starts in middle action then goes back to beginning.) What I liked is the world building of coyote and wished that I could have seen more of it.

Opinion:

If I could describe this novel, I would describe it as a version of Jack London's Call of the wild and White Fang written for children. I think in this book the author is trying to find her voice because potential for an emotional and amazing story are there. ( I have read the next two books, and they really pack an emotional punch.) And this is a book i will share with my son once he grows up more. ( He is three and a half, and the book is recommended for middle grades.)
