Summary:

When Homicide Detective Cameron Gates befriends Dolly, the little old lady who lives across the street, she is warned not to get lured into helping the elderly woman by investigating the unsolved murder of one of her girls. “She’s senile,” Cameron is warned. “It’s not a real murder.”
Such is not the case. After Dolly is brutally murdered, Cameron discovers that the sweet blue-haired lady’s “girl” was a call girl, who had been killed in a mysterious double homicide.

Meanwhile, Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton is looking for answers to the murder of a childhood friend, a sheriff deputy whose cruiser is found at the bottom of a lake. The deputy had disappeared almost twenty years ago while privately investigating the murder of a local prostitute.

It doesn’t take long for the Lovers in Crime to put their cases together to reveal a long-kept secret that some believe is worth killing to keep undercover.

Characters:

Main characters include Joshua Thornton and Cameron Gates, while secondary ones are Joshua's older daughter Tracy, then Dolly the Madam with an acerbic wit, then the police officer's son who has always been there for Tracy and who is about the same age. ( my apologies, some of the names escape me.) Also, I loved the pets, namely Irving who looks like a skunk and apparently deserves his own books, at least in my opinion. ( I honestly wish that I could have read books in a different order so I could remember if there were any Gnarly and Irving scenes together... )

Theme:

Looks and stories can be deceiving

Plot:

The story is in third person narrative from Cameron's and Joshua's points of views. What is unique about this tale in particular is that there are two prologues, one beginning in 1970s where a dancing girl meets up with her pimp, while another one takes place years later when Joshua is asked by his friend, a cop, to accompany him to meet an information source. Then years pass again and the present story begins, which happens to be few months after DEAD ON ICE, where Cameron is trying to get to know the locals. Just like in other books, the characters, both animal and human are scene stealers and I loved how the story both manages to be a mystery and it shifts to the town and people itself, which means a lot of contentment and being sated.

Opinion:

This story is far more entertaining and engaging than it's predecessor: DEAD ON ICE.  In this one, the writing, the plot and the characters really come into heir own so to speak, and there is also a lot more focus on the small town life, which i enjoyed a lot. ( i loved the conflicts and fighting between the church ladies.) The mystery is well done and the author really knows how to twist the plot so that one can't see it coming anytime soon.  Some old favorite secondary characters such as Joshua's cousin, Tad, returns, and the reader will also get to meet Joshua's daughter Tracy who has began changes in her own life. There is focus on growth and one can't help but wonder how the complex mystery will be solved.
