Summary:

Dead on Ice is the first installment of Lauren Carr’s new series (Lovers in Crime) featuring Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton and Pennsylvania State Police homicide detective Cameron Gates.

Spunky Cameron Gates is tasked with solving the murder of Cherry Pickens, a legendary star of pornographic films, whose body turns up in an abandoned freezer. The case has a personal connection to her lover, Joshua Thornton, because the freezer was located in his cousin’s basement. It doesn’t take long for their investigation to reveal that the risqué star’s roots were buried in their rural Ohio Valley community, something that Cherry had kept off her show business bio. She should have kept her hometown off her road map, too—because when this starlet came running home from the mob, it proved to be a fatal homecoming.

Characters:

Main characters would be Joshua Thornton and Cameron Gates who are seriously dating. One is a logical and thoughtful attourney who plays by the rules and wants for justice to be done for the murder victims. Something else is that he is a local to the town and knows everyone. Cameron Gates is a police officer who seems to strike me as a bit hot tempered but whom I am growing to enjoy, and she is dedicated to her work as well. She has had a broken heart and a previous marriage, but much of it isn't swelled upon. ( The case does get touched up ON and resolved in a future installment.) Other characters added a lot of charm to the story but the story is more plot motivated than character based.

Theme:

You never know how past plays into the present

Plot:

The story is written in third person narrative from Cameron's and Joshuas points of view. Like other Lauren Carr tales, the novel begins with the victims murder and then adds a lot of quirky characters, plenty of charm and a number of smiles that should grace ones lips. I am also enjoying getting to know the youngest Thornton son, Danny.

Opinion:

So I have previously read and reviewed several of Lauren Carr's mysteries, and have familiarity with her characters. My favorite characters, or family, I should say happen to be Joshua Thornton and Cameron Gates.( please don't be jealous Mac, but I need more time to warm up to you...) so I was pretty excited to see the origins for Joshua and Cameron's connection, and DEAD ON ICE did not disappoint. I was a bit surprised at a few things though: one is that I wasn't used to having references to adult acting in DEAD ON ICE, ( I am not a prude, but i would guess the other Lauren Carr novels I read are something you would want to give to a family member,) and I was also surprised at the romance angle. ( again not a prude, but it's the reputation that Lauren Carr's novels have gained in my heart.) Other than that, a great who-done-it mystery and a way for the reader to get to know Joshua and Cameron.
