Okay, there are things I liked about the book, and there are things that I wasn't very fond of. What I enjoyed about the book is learning about the author's family, and how much attention she pays to her Irish father. Considering the modern day culture that I grew up in where distant relatives aren't connected to one another and rarely help, at least in my family, it was an eye opening experience of how close and well established the relationships between various family members are. I also enjoyed learning about life in Canada, in Qubec in particular and learning about how the culture functioned. What I didn't enjoy about the book is that the story seemed to lack a single narrative or focus. One minute the author is discussing something that I think would be important to the story, then the next minute she is talking about something that doesn't seem relevant. Also, while including a lot of focus on the closeness of the family members and neighbors, the author neglected to detail how these experiences shaped her personality for better or worse. I feel that I barely got to know the author throughout the book. I think if you're interested in Canadian life or culture, or else are seeking nostalgia of how things are better, or are part of the author's family, then the story will be enjoyable. If you're looking for a single narrative story, or are hoping to see a character grow up, then its not the right book or story.
