Summary:
Dark secrets lie just below the surface of the small town of Lake Porker, Texas. The long-time, yet much-despised mayor has been keeping his job by means of rigging elections with the help of the town clerk, a highly respected woman who secretly happens to be the mayor's dominatrix lover. The man that most of the town thinks is a successful stock day trader is actually a methamphetamine kingpin. His drop-dead beautiful and supposedly devoted God-fearing wife is not only plotting to kill him and take over his meth empire, but she's having sex with everyone and anyone she thinks will be helpful in advancing that goal. The new African-American deputy is drawing the ire of the town rednecks and is secretly involved in a May - December romance with the sheriff's wife. Then there's Octavio, the oversexed freshwater octopus bred by the brilliant and lonely fish hatchery scientist who has trained him in the ways of pleasure and has taken him as her lover. The giant octopus periodically escapes the fish breeding lab and roams the lake looking for other targets for his sexual talents, much to the confusing combination of arousal and horror in his victims. Octavio can't be kept secret forever, and soon he attracts the attention of a cryptozoologist and documentary film producer and his intrepid cameraman out to make their next hit reality television special. All of this plays out in an absurd, darkly comedic romp filled with sex, drugs, and violence. Welcome to the cold, sticky embrace of "The Eight Fingered Fiend Of Lake Porker"!
Characters:
I have to say that the characters are more told than show. They tend to be on the shallow end rather than deep one, yet they are strangely compelling. To be brief, Betty-Joe Porker-Wilkins is best described as sunny, cheerful and perfect in every way, one exception being that she's way too greedy and doesn't know how to enjoy what she has. There is also Dr. Braun who is shy, very plain as well as lonely and can easily be manipulated. She is oddly talented in teaching Octavio certain things, while when it comes to her, she isn't very good. Let's also not forget Octavio, an octopus who seems to have a great amount of fondness towards Dr. Braun and let's also include Deputy Abs and his father, the mayor, the town clerk and so forth within this unusual town. Each character does tend to be memorable.

Plot:
In someways this book reminded me of The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club maybe because its more tell than show, or maybe because of its shortness or unexpected sense of humor. Yet I really enjoyed it. The book flip-flopped between different points of view, giving the readers glimpses of different characters, although I have to admit that I was very disappointed in the ending because I did grow fond of a certain character only to have that character yanked away. I would best describe this book as sort of a guilty pleasure read, or something to read when you need humor in life.

Opinion:
If one takes a look through my five star list, almost all the books I rated as five stars tend to be serious literature, (some exceptions being a book by Duncan Whitehead and Jodi Ambrose as well as Mary E Merrell.) This book isn't serious literature and one will need to have an open mind to grapple with the topics that were brought up, and also it doesn't really teach anything meaningful. This book is a comedy, a farce, a place full of corruption and where nothing is what it seems. This book will require you to suspend your belief to enjoy its absurdness as well as be open minded towards Octavio the octopus's special abilities. This also has sense of humor where one least expects it. Many a time I was reading the book and started laughing at the comments regarding Dr. Braun, or towards Betty Joe otherwise known as BJ (yes, it is what you think it is...)
