Characters:
Characters are given very little background, and at times I was confused as to their roles in the war. Kelsey is a young girl who happens to be a soldier and she also has a mysterious scar that shows off a lot of petals. She is resourceful and doesn't give up easily. Nicholas is a young magician who is inventive and has some memorable friends. There are also eccentric teachers and friends as well as a king and even a memorable gargoyle.

Plot:
While the events seemed to be straightforward, there was little to no character exposition and it becomes up to the reader to try to understand what is going on and why its going on. I would imagine that for those who like to know everything they can about the characters and the world, then the book will provide very little information, but if someone is action oriented or wants to learn a valuable lesson about the power of words then this is a book to check out.

Personally for me, there seemed to be something off when it came to the story. Apparently this is the third book in the series titled The Orphanage of Miracles, which probably explains why there was very little to no exposition in this book when it came to characters and I couldn't decide if this story is a fantasy, and if it is, its a strange modern fantasy combining modern world and traditional fantasy world. The plot and the story are interesting, I only wished to know that the book was part of the series and that it seemed to be written for young readers.
