Theme:

"No matter where you are now, there is hope. Within these pages lie a powerful game plan and manual to the elusive world of authors, speakers, and experts. Book Power is the playbook that defines each step of the path to positioning yourself as the authority in your field." (Page 9 on my e-reader, Introduction)

Problem addressed:

If you are struggling with business or how to use the media or perhaps what you have to do to become a popular author, then this book will address the issues. One quick thing is that I suspect the book is geared towards Non-fiction writers, although fiction writers can also use the advice written in the pages.

Summary of content:

Instead of it being a stressful situation, the author encourages the audience to think of it as a game and explains why. She introduces the reader to various operations and then breaks it down into operations and missions, separating the game into nine levels.

Thesis:

"Today's winners are the players who rise to the top, the ones who are the most seen and heard. But do you ever stop to consider why we choose to turn our focus to them in the first place? What makes them winning experts? I repeat: It is a special combination of branding, positioning, and publishing on a congruent platform aligned with their unique message. They didn't get there by luck; they knew how to play their position." (page 9-10 of my e-reader, introduction)

Afterword

Why its interesting and informative:

I never knew there was a difference between foreword and introduction, or that so much will go into even self publishing and trying to earn money from the venture. In here the author strongly encourages her readers to see this as a game instead of the tedious work, and also breaks things down into little steps and gets people acquainted with reality of self publishing, that even if you do self publish but dream of being big, it will take a lot of work.

Supports thesis:

Although I hadn't tried her steps, the thesis is supported and she does talk about things in micro-detail so it doesn't sound vague or overwhelming to the new authors.

Address Issues:

In her first chapter, the author describes the idea of playing games, how games encourage people to play to win, and then adeptly mixes the game playing into the business and how much people want to come along instead of sitting out on the bench or how people quit. She encourages people not to give up and to continue playing the game, mentioning how if we continue, we will stumble on to greatness.

Ideas in book vs larger ideas:

This is an easy book to read, and the steps are broken down and format is written as a game-play, with the author encouraging readers to celebrate success once they are done with level, except this type of game applies to publishing a book and to real life. I would guess anyone with the right ingredients can become great.

Agree/Disagree:

Although I hadn't tried out the steps, I was surprised by some of them, such as incorporating keywords and the title to make the book easier to find, (does it apply to fiction I wonder?) or using a tape recorder to hear yourself talk and then asking someone else to transcribe the tape.

Sources:

Throughout the book the author does advertise and credit the sources she has used. She also encourages the reader to check out her website for more free material and she does follow her own advice.

Conclusion:

I did enjoy learning and reading the book, although my version wasn't suited towards e-pub. Few times I had to endlessly cycle through multiple blank pages which was annoying for me. This is not an overwhelming read and I highly encourage people or future authors to read it, at least those considering self publishing.

Quick notes: I would like to thank the author for the opportunity to read and review the book.
